Multiple personalities has come up a lot in the past week. That last sentence might sound kind of random, but for this grad student/music blogger, the concept is a tempting one. It would be nice if I could split off into multiples and get more stuff done in the day.
That is not to say that Marine Dreams’ self-titled debut album suffers from some kind of fractured identity. In fact, the album is coherent and expertly put-together. Consider the first blurb a veiled apology for not keeping you up to date with music these past weeks. One of the albums that sadly got put on the back burner is this finely honed pop album by former Attack In Black bassist and songwriter Ian Kehoe, which was released on November 15.
Marine Dreams is chock full of power pop hovering above a sea of distortion and carried by deliciously crunchy guitars. Its sunny disposition draws comparisons to bands like Yukon Blonde and Shotgun Jimmie, while its affinity for sudden turns and dangling listeners along recalls Apollo Ghosts and Chad VanGaalen.
This is a feel good album of surprising technical skill underneath its apparent simplicity, backed by and recorded in the studio of former band mates Daniel and Ian Romano. Like all good things, the 32-minute album comes to an end much too soon; the weekend’s over, and another work day is just over the horizon. To hell with that. Press rewind and play this album over again.
